Things I Wish I told You

1. You do not know me.

The good and the bad you’ve seen of me

Were not my best and my worst.

When you said that this universe is not

Enough for both of us, you didn’t know

I could write you another universe.

2. You do not owe me.

For all that you gave, I don’t expect you to

Give me an apology.

When they ask for a good story, I shall not

Tell them about us, but about me

And how I learned what I learned.

3. You do not own me.

Except for the lipstick stains I left on your shirt

And my hair strands on your bed.

When you told me to be yours,

I became yours less for treating me like a property

With an expiration date.
